چکیده

T H E requirement for research to determine some of the general and specific genetic effects of X irradiation to consecutive generations of mammals was stressed by The UNITED NATIONS CIENTIFIC OMMITTEE ON THE EFFECTS OF ATOMIC RADIATION (1958). In response to this need a program was started to investigate possible nonspecific effects of X irradiation to consecutive generations of male mice. This program was designed with full awareness that there are as many approaches to the problem as there are investigators willing to undertake such a task, and with appreciation of our then present and projected facilities and personnel. One of the primary objectives of this program was to do comparative studies on control-line and X-irradiated-line mouse populations after several generations of X-ray exposure. For this reason it was desirable to start the two lines with the smallest amount of heterozygosity possible. No attempt has been made to preserve “recessive” mutations or to estimate the frequency of lethals, and although X-ray exposures were given primarily at the prespermatid stage of germ cell development, a few offspring may have been propagated from sperm irradiated as spermatids. The following are observations on lifespan of mice from 5, 10, and 15 generations of X-irradiated parentage, productivity of mice from 20 generations of X-irradiated parentage, and radioresistance of mice from 25 generations of Xirradiated ancestors.

Elevated mutation rates in the germ line of first- and second-generation offspring of irradiated male mice.

Mutation rates at two expanded simple tandem repeat loci were studied in the germ line of first- and second-generation offspring of inbred male CBA/H, C57BL/6, and BALB/c mice exposed to either high linear energy transfer fission neutrons or low linear energy transfer x-rays. Paternal CBA/H exposure to either x-rays or fission neutrons resulted in increased mutation rates in the germ line of tw...

Sperm DNA damage in mice irradiated with various doses of X-rays alone or in combination with actinomycin D or bleomycin sulfate: an in vivo study

Background: DNA damage in male germ cells due to exposure to environmental and manmade physico-chemical genotoxic agents is considered as the main cause of male infertility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of combined modalities (radiotherapy and chemotherapy) routinely used for cancer treatment on mouse sperm chromatin in vivo. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight mice were div...

The effects of exposure to fluoxetine during lactation on testicular tissue and sperm parameters in mice offspring

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor is commonly prescribed to treat maternal depression in pregnancy and lactation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of maternal exposure to fluoxetine via lactation on testicular tissue, sperm parameters including count, motility, viability, and normal morphology and testicular oxidative stress status in male mice offspring. Ten mic...

Effect of Seizure During Pregnancy on Cognitive and Motor Coordination Performances in Adult Male Offspring of Female Mice: The Role of Serum Corticosterone Level

Introduction: Human and animal models have demonstrated that seizure during pregnancy can cause cognitive and motor impairments in the offspring. However, the mechanisms of this effect need to be elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of seizure during pregnancy on cognitive and motor performances of the adult male offspring with an emphasis on the hypothalamic–pitu...

Look Different: Effect of Radiation Hormesis on the Survival Rate of Immunosuppressed Mice

Background: Hormesis is defined as the bio-positive response of something which is bio-negative in high doses. In the present study, the effect of radiation hormesis was evaluated on the survival rate of immunosuppressed BALB/c mice by Cyclosporine A.Materials and Methods: We used 75 consanguine, male, BALB/c mice in this experiment. The first group received Technetium-99m (3700Bq) and the seco...
